Mr Gareth P Jones

Chair of Anglesey Agricultural Society 2025

It has been a privilege and a pleasure to be elected as the Chairman of the Anglesey Show this year. As the son and grandson of two former Chairmen of the Society, it is a great honour for me to step into this role. I am a dairy farmer, raised on Sarn Farm, Llanfechell, and now living just down the road at Carrog Ganol Farm, Rhosgoch, with my wife, Mari, and our sons, Huw and William.

Being part of the Society and helping with the organisation of the Show has been an integral part of my upbringing. One of my earliest memories is accompanying my parents on the weekend before the Show to put up the competitors' names in the cattle shed. Arriving at the members' car park early in the morning, I was always eager to see if Grandad’s car was the first to arrive! I also looked forward to competing in the small garden section and the competition to create an animal out of fruit or vegetables in the produce tent. As I got older, I competed in the "Young Handlers" classes, sometimes with my own heifer or steer and sometimes borrowing a Hereford calf from the Sylwebir family. Helping steward the "Grand Parade" each year was a highlight for me, taking pride in ensuring everything ran smoothly once the competitors had left the ring.

I have been a member of the Society's Council for some years now. Joining the committee, one realizes how much work goes into organizing the Show. It takes several years to learn and understand about all aspects of the Show – and I'm still learning. Learning about the field setting, committee protocol, administrative matters, additional events on the field, the association's accounts and many other things – it takes time to become familiar with all of these things.

There is an active group of officers and volunteers involved in organising the Show, a mix of experienced members with enthusiastic young members who work together efficiently. It is encouraging to see so many young members now on the committees of the Society. I'd like to thank everyone who helps and organises – it wouldn't be possible to put on a show without them. The development of the society is so important in order to ensure a bright future for the Show. Several new ideas have come into existence over the past few years. The revamped entertainment area ‘ Y Cowt’, The Battle af the Bales competition, and the Members' Tent have been a great success. A major attraction will return to the Main Ring this year as Paul Hannam's four-wheeled motorcycle performs.

The Anglesey Show is the highlight of the year for many people in rural Anglesey. It's an opportunity to showcase our local produce, top quality animals and socialize with each other. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at Sioe Môn 2025 and wishing all competitors, exhibitors and businesses a successful Show.
